CitSci is is excited to participate in this year’s Conference for Advancing Participatory Sciences (CAPS)!
Our team will be busy hosting, presenting, and attending sessions throughout the conference (May 27-30). Check out the full agenda here. Below are some highlights you won’t want to miss.
#LeaveNoTrash CAPS Challenge
While at CAPS, we invite all attendees to contribute to the main Leave No Trash project on CitSci. Then, on May 30, we’ll crunch the numbers and award prizes to the top three contributors.
The Leave No Trash project run by Leave No Trace invites people around the world to clean up their communities—and document what they find.
You may ask: why log the trash, and not just pick it up? Tracking what you collect helps identify common litter types, raise awareness, and drive long-term waste solutions on campus and beyond.
We created a datasheet to help you participate, but you can also just head over to the CitSci app or website to log your data directly. May the most enthusiastic trash-cleaner-uper win!
Tabling
CitSci will be tabling throughout the conference. Stop by our table to say hi, or to explore/grab resources such as:
- Our “Intro to CitSci” Flier
- Our “Services” Flier
- Our newsletter sign-up
- Fun CitSci stickers
- …and much more!
Conference Sessions
Here are some of the presentations that our team is planning to give:
- Poster: “Improving research protocols through natural language processing”
- (P:139) Improving research protocols through natural language processing
Designing research protocols with clear and interpretable questions is a challenge for new project managers. We will explore preliminary results on how natural language processing can be used to align protocols with survey theory best practices. (Emerging work)
Budnicki, Brandon (Colorado State University); Dr. Phillips, Hannah (Nestle); Dr Newman, Greg (Colorado State University) - Wed, May 28 | 2:45pm – 3:45pm PDT | Ballroom, PSU Smith Memorial Union
- Check out Brandon’s poster, below!
2. Presentation: “3 things to know about CitSci, why we’re still not meeting needs, and what we plan to do about it”
- (T:110) 3 things to know about CitSci, why we’re still not meeting needs, and what we plan to do about it
Join us to learn about CitSci: a free, interoperable, and flexible participatory science platform. However, one size never fits all and PS platforms like CitSci are still not meeting the evolving needs of PS. Come learn what we plan to do about this (Emerging work)
Newman, Greg (CitSci) - Wed, May 28 | 1:15pm – 2:30pm PDT | Room 333, PSU Smith Memorial Union
3. Presentation: “GoBituary: Crowdsourcing Histories to Expand Participatory Science in Social Science Contexts”
- (T:190) GoBituary: Crowdsourcing Histories to Expand Participatory Science in Social Science Contexts
GoBituary uses participatory science methods to crowdsource oral histories and assess community impacts via surveys, and this presentation explores what the humanities have to learn from participatory science. (Stories of lessons learned)
Nickerson, Caroline (CitSci/Florida Community Innovation); Lanzino, Anna (Florida Community Innovation/UC Berkeley) - Thu, May 29 | 1:15pm – 2:30pm PDT | Room 328/9, PSU Smith Memorial Union
