Every CitSci project collects observations, or individual records of data submitted to the project. However, not every observation in a project is necessarily visible to every user. What you can see depends on the project’s privacy settings, your role in the project, and whether you are logged in. The Observations page brings together the records you have permission to view and gives you several ways to explore their details.
The Observation page is where you can view observations submitted to a particular project.

To access the Observations page, click on the Data tab from any project page and select Observations from the dropdown menu.

List View
List View is the default view for the Observations page. You will see a list of the observations for the project you have permission to view. The set of observations you see will vary depending on your role (manager, participant, member of the public), the project’s privacy settings, and whether you are logged in.
Card View
The card view shows the observations in a card format with a few details about the observation as well as an image (if available) for that observation. The View Details button in card view will open the Observation details modal.
Map View (NEW!)
Select the Map view to see the observations as markers on the map. When you click on a map marker, the Observation Details modal will appear for that observation. You have the option of scrolling through the observations via the modal or closing it and choosing another marker from the map.

Observation Details Modal (NEW!)
You can click on the gray View Details button to the right of individual observations to view the details of a particular observation. Through the modal that pops up, you can scroll through all of the observations and their detail screens using the previous and next buttons in the top left or bottom right corner.

If you are logged in to CitSci and are the project manager or the person who submitted a particular observation, you will also see a yellow Edit button next to the Prev button for observations you have permission to edit.

Search and Filter (NEW!)
Use the Search and Filter tools to the left of the screen to refine the list of observations you see. You can filter by:
- Location (the names of locations associated with the observations)
- Datasheet (datasheets for that project only)
- Observation Year (the year the observation was created)
- Observed By (the username of the person who made the observation)
- Show observations with photos (Check the box to filter to only observations with photos)

Privacy Settings for Data Viewing
Project managers can view all observations (public and private) for their projects.
Project participants can view all public observations as well as all their personal observations (public or private, when logged in).
Visitors to the project, who are not participants or managers, can view public observations for open projects.
